02 / About me

Meet Josh.

I’m a backend engineer at heart. I start with the schema and the APIs, then keep going all the way to the interface and the last frame of motion, and I judge the result by how it feels in someone’s hands.

Tech Hub Consultant

Arizona State University Tech Hub

In this role, I provided walk-in technical support to ASU students at the Tech Hub, mainly at the Polytechnic campus with some shifts at Tempe. Most of the work was account and network troubleshooting, such as ASURITE activation errors, sign-in lockouts, Duo, and WiFi, along with restoring Windows computers. Terminal and PowerShell were everyday tools in the job.

I was also on the team building the Tech Hub’s RAG chatbot on ASU’s CreateAI platform. I trimmed its system prompt to about 52 lines so it gave the simplest fix first, found a bug where its knowledge-base-only mode missed answers that were in its documents, which was escalated to the CreateAI team, and stress-tested its guardrails with prompt injections and privacy probes.

At Poly, I took it upon myself to improve the workstations. I located dead Ethernet ports by their jack IDs for the network team to activate, catalogued unused Macs, and tested a Zoom setup that lets Tempe staff help Poly students during coverage gaps. This work led to my promotion to Lead at Poly in May 2026.

Information Technology Manager

Kisaka and Company, Certified Public Accountants

I lead technology at Kisaka across software engineering, IT operations, and infrastructure. I design, build, deploy, and maintain the software that supports the firm’s internal operations, alongside its website, integrations, automation, and the scripts used to provision and configure new computers. Where existing software cannot meet an operational need, I build what the firm requires.

I also plan and manage the technology environment that work depends on, covering workstations, laptops, printers, servers, networking, and the software that operates them. My responsibilities extend to technical support, security, backups and recovery, asset inventories, policies, documentation, and change control, as well as coordinating technology projects with staff and vendors.

This role gives me responsibility across the full life of the firm’s technology, from writing the software and deploying the systems to maintaining the infrastructure that keeps them running.

Software Engineer

Pearl Accounting Solutions

During this internship, I worked on a company-wide project to move Pearl’s SACCO ledger system to the cloud. It was a LAN-hosted Microsoft Access application written in VBA, so it could only be accessed from SACCO offices. Our 5 person team rebuilt it in Java Spring Boot with Thymeleaf, and by the end of my internship it was live for about 15 SACCOs.

Alongside the project, I trained in cloud technologies, deployment, and coding best practices. The training covered Spring Security for access control and password hashing, Maven dependency management, Docker builds, and Spring Boot code structured around service layers, input validation, and tests. I also taught the team to use AI agents, mainly Claude Code.

During the deployment to Railway, I focused on the system’s security, user interface, and CI/CD pipeline. I carried out a security audit combining code review, automated scanning, and live testing on a copy of the application. I documented each vulnerability with a recommended fix and advised on platforms for authentication and audit logging.

Software Engineer

Tellistic Technology Services

During this internship, I worked on a project to turn survey responses collected through SurveyCTO into structured data for a client’s analysis and reporting. I built a Python-based ETL pipeline using Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, and Azure SQL to automate the movement of data from raw submissions to database tables.

Much of the work involved reconciling complex survey structures with a relational database schema. I flattened nested repeat groups, standardized numeric and date fields through explicit type casting, and handled null values before loading. I also troubleshot duplicate-record issues and configured wildcard file paths to accommodate Spark’s dynamically generated output filenames, helping the pipeline run consistently as new data arrived.

I took ownership of the core processing logic, learning unfamiliar tools through documentation, tutorials, and hands-on debugging. The project brought ingestion, data transformation, and database loading together into a repeatable workflow that prepared survey data for downstream analysis and reporting.

Information Technology Support Analyst

Grand Canyon Education, Inc.

I worked on the IT Help Desk for Grand Canyon Education as a Level 1 Analyst, supporting the university’s staff and faculty over the phone. On most calls I connected to the person’s screen through our internal remote access tool and fixed the issue while they were still on the line, from accounts in Active Directory to mailbox and sign-in problems in the Exchange Admin Center and Microsoft Entra ID (was called Azure AD at that time), along with VPN, printers, phones, and Office.

Every call became a ticket in CA Service Desk. Most of mine were closed on the call, and the rest I routed to the right team, often topping the daily board for tickets moved. In total, I created, closed, and moved more than 500 tickets.

Once a week I worked at the Nerd Herd, GCU’s walk-in tech support, helping students with hardware repairs, virus removal, and getting onto the campus network.

IT Support Assistant

Kisaka and Company, Certified Public Accountants

I assisted the IT manager with day-to-day technical support for the firm’s staff, responding to calls about Windows computers, Office applications, printers, and other peripherals. I resolved most printer issues independently, troubleshot unresponsive applications, and carried out initial checks on connectivity problems. When an issue needed further attention, I passed it to the manager with details of what I had tried, flagging recurring faults and damaged equipment.

I also prepared Windows computers for use, connected monitors, keyboards, mouses, and printers, configured local administrator accounts, and downloaded, installed, and activated software. I helped staff with everyday tasks in Office, printing, scanning, and saving files, alongside setting up projectors and connecting laptops for meetings.

During quieter periods, I helped transfer client information from paper records into Excel spreadsheets, supporting colleagues with data entry to help work move faster.
